Catalog structure: make products easier to understand and manage

The way you name categories, attributes, and variants affects store management and how quickly customers find the right product.

Merchant organizing products and matching them to a digital multi-category catalog

A good catalog is not only a gallery of images; it is a shared language between the customer and store team. Inconsistent categories and options make discovery harder and increase inventory and fulfillment mistakes.

Build categories around how customers search

Use names the market understands and place every product where customers expect it. Add hierarchy only when needed, and separate browsing categories from tags used for filtering.

  • A clear product name that distinguishes similar items.
  • A consistent main image that supports responsive cropping.
  • Standardized attributes such as size, color, or capacity.
  • An internal code that helps inventory and fulfillment teams find the item.

«Every minute saved in understanding a product repeats its value during discovery, ordering, and fulfillment.»

Catalog organization principle

Control variants from one source

When a product has colors or sizes, give each option clear inventory and pricing where required. Avoid duplicating the same product as separate items because updates become harder and comparison becomes fragmented.
